Calvi, Corsica

After leaving St. Tropez at 4am, we sailed the 102 nautical miles across the open Med to Calvi. It was a beautiful sail, with warm, sunny weather, gentle breezes, and whales! More on that later.

We arrived in Calvi, Corsica just before sunset, and anchored in a broad, beautiful bay in the shadows of Calvi's most famous landmark, it's 13th century citadel that guards the city. Cavli was faithful to Genoa during the various invasions and uprisings that occurred in Corsica over the centuries. Known as a fiercely independent people, it is somewhat against unusual that Calvi would maintain allegiance to Genoa during these times.

Within the citadel is the home of Napolean's godfather, and numerous references, statues, etc. to Christopher Columbus, who Calvi considers a native son (although no one really knows if he was actually from there).

It was cloudy while we were there, but that didn't stop Ryan from getting some more swim time.

It was a relaxing few days of enjoying strolling a beautiful, ancient city, enjoying its cafes

And a peaceful anchorage.
