Rhodes

From Santorini we waived goodbye to Amstel and Uncle G and sailed 140nm east to the island of Rhodes. The old town of Rhodes is a Unesco World Heritage site in part because it is a nearly perfectly preserved medieval walled city.

We took a walking tour with a local guide who told us of the history of Rhodes from ancient times, when the famed Colossus of Rhodes guarded the entrance to the harbor, to the medieval period during which the current walled city was built. We learned about the Knights of St John, which were responsible for much of the layout and construction of the medieval city.

The highlights were the architectural details, the artwork inside many of these buildings, and the amazing mosaic floors that were on display in the Palace of the Grand Master.
