Santorini from the Air

After Milos we sailed to Santorini. While it should have been obvious by looking at the map that the islands of Santorini were a giant cratered volcano, it was only until we sailed into the caldera that we realized just how striking it was.

The rim of the crater is about 6 miles in diameter and rising several hundred feet out of the ocean, with two islands, Thira (the one we call Santorini) and Therasia circling about 80% of the caldera above water. In the middle are a couple of barren piles of volcanic rock, the remnants of a once giant volcano top that blew in about 1600 BCE. When you are inside the caldera looking up at the sheer cliffs and the size of the area, you can't help but think of the awesome forces that created such a place.

It was an absolutely incredible place to spend a few days on anchor, exploring and swimming!

Next up, we get onto Santorini and see the sights!
